This Weekend: Gamewatch and Raffle to be at Barney’s Pasadena!

Hey Los Angeles Hawkeyes, stay tuned for this week’s Gamewatch invite. We’re headed to Pasadena this weekend! Hope you can join us there!

2012 Gamewatch #7: Iowa vs. Penn State

Recap of Last Week: It was cold, it was rainy, and it wasn’t pretty, but Iowa defensive back Greg Castillo intercepted a deflected pass to give the Hawkeyes a 19-16 double overtime win. Running back Mark Weisman continues to amaze, running 26 times for 116 yards and a touchdown before leaving late with an injury. It was Weisman’s fourth 100-yard rushing game in a row. Not bad for a guy who began the season as a backup fullback. Not only was it a big win in conference play, it was also coach Kirk Ferentz’s 100th victory as Iowa’s head football coach.  He is now 43 behind the legendary Hayden Fry.

Now to this week…We are right where we want to be.  Sure it was a very disappointing 2 – 2 start but the Hawks now sit atop the Legends Division leader board along with Michigan at 2 – 0 in conference play.  The Hawks are in control of their own destiny and it continues Saturday night against Penn State.  Penn State started the season 0 – 2 but has since turned the page on the child sex abuse scandal and is on a 4-game winning streak.  Mark Weisman is cleared to participate after sustaining a sprained ankle last week.  Coach Ferentz said he’d be shocked if Weisman can play but the good news is that true Sophomore Jordan Canzeri will be Greg Garmon’s back-up.  Canzeri showed a lot of burst and athleticism late last year but tore his ACL in the spring.  Coach Ferentz said this week that the cavalry is coming!  We are only going to get better and last week’s win gave the Hawks all the confidence they need.  It’s a night game (5:05pm start) which puts us in the spotlight. Get to your favorite Barney’s location early to snag a table. We look forward to seeing everyone.

2012 Gamewatch #6: Iowa vs. Michigan State

Recap of Last Week: The Hawkeyes had a bye week but the players didn’t take advantage of an R & R opportunity.  In fact, three players were arrested most notably starting senior corner back Micah Hyde.  It is still unknown if Hyde will play Saturday.  However, Michigan State’s passing game is not particularly effective and Greg Castillo should start.  Castillo had an interception two weeks ago in the Hawks’ win over Minnesota.

Now to this week…The Hawkeyes have not been great after a bye week and Vandenberg is 2 – 6 as a starting quarterback away from Kinnick.  That said Michigan State plays Michigan next week so it is a perfect opportunity to sneak into East Lansing and take down Sparty.  Michigan State had to rally late last week to edge-by a winless (and hopeless) Indiana team.  I know it may be getting old but the battle for the top of the B1G Ten, especially our “Legends” division, is far from over.  We certainly control our own destiny and the team needs all of our support.  There is no Homecoming and Car-mageddon is over so I expect everyone to be out full force at your favorite Barney’s location this Saturday.

Raffle Location: Santa Monica

The Deal: Enjoy 35% off food and 50% off beverages for all who wear Iowa Gear (offer valid during the game only).  Please be courteous and gratuitous to Barney’s Staff – they will be very busy this week.

Stein Hoisting Competition: Great Halftime Entertainment

During halftime of the Iowa/Minnesota football game, Barney’s Beanery of Santa Monica was initiated with a stein hoisting competition. Jacob Bottoms of the Los Angeles Iowa Club led the event and provided some new and fun entertainment during halftime.

Jovi Ruiz (second from right) won the stein hoisting competition with a time of 2 min 3 sec.

For those of you unaware of what stein hoisting is here are some rules: Steins are filled with water (not beer) and a group of Hawkeyes see how long they can hold the stein with an outstretched arm. The winner is the person who holds the stein up the longest without spilling or dropping their arm. It is fun competition and this weeks’ winners  were:

Women: Jovi Ruiz at 2min 3sec
Men: Mike Bowman at 5min 8sec
