Volunteer to help with the 2015 Iowa Picnic by the Sea

SAVE THE DATE!!

Saturday, August 8 from 10am-3pm at the Battleship Iowa

Click here for more information about this year’s event.

We do need some volunteers to start planning from now until the picnic day.

These are our needs:

  • Assistant Picnic Coordinator– must have good computer, communication, organizational and writing skills to work with Don on a wide variety of aspects of the picnic. Someone who can devote some time to the picnic and lives relatively close to Long Beach so we could easily work together and with other committee chairpersons.
  • Event Set up/Tear Down Chairperson– develop a master set-up plan to include tables, chairs, tents, entertainment stage and various items of equipment and supplies needed to run the picnic.  Duties involve researching sources of supplies, pricing, fees and understanding the restrictions or limits regarding the set-up and tear-down functions. Must have availability Friday, August 7 for some set up.
  • Sponsors/ Donations Chairperson– developing a strategy to solicit donations, door prizes, Iowa Memorabilia, Silent Auction items and Free Stuff Iowa California. Avoids duplicate solicitations to the same individuals or organizations and develops marketing tools and documents for committee members to send to potential donors with an emphasis on the long history of the Iowa By The Sea Picnic and the culture and beauty of the State of Iowa. Members of this committee must have good communication, writing and organizational skills along with a high standard of ethics.
  • Iowa Picnic Merchandize Store Manager– Work with the board to research items and develop a strategy to establish a practical and cost effective array of items for sale. Items would need to have a broad appeal to our constituents.

Please email Don Swenson (iowabythesea@gmail.com) with any questions or concerns you may have!

Come volunteer at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

We have fun.  We do good.  We’d love you to volunteer with us Saturday morning, April 25th, for our Club’s annual community service project at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.  Please RSVP by 4/13.

Our goal is to have over 50 Big Ten friends to volunteer. The Foodbank is a non-profit organization that solicits, stores and distributes donated food and grocery projects to charitable agencies throughout the Greater Los Angeles area.

As we’ve done in past years, we’ll sort, clean and repackage donated items for a morning under the direction of the Foodbank staff and then, if there’s interest, we’ll head off to lunch at a local restaurant. This is always a rewarding event to participate in, it’s free, and you will receive good karma for another year.

Please note: the minimum age to volunteer is 14.

  • Make a positive difference for our Los Angeles community
  • It’s not horrible…some even claim it to be fun
  • Meet other good looking and smart Big Ten alumni
  • Advance the good name of the Big Ten Club of Southern California

Co-Sponsored by the Iowa, Purdue and the Northwestern University Club of Los Angeles.
Questions? Jim Jacobs, Big Ten Club Vice President (NU) at wildcats76@verizon.net or call him at 626.334.5676 (home).
