After a two game road trip, the Hawkeyes return to Kinnick Stadium hosting #14 Wisconsin. Iowa’s coming off a victory against Illinois improving to 7-3 on the season.
408…that is the new FBS single game rushing record set by Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon, just last week against Nebraska. A former Hawkeye commit, Gordon has publicly expressed his displeasure of returning to Iowa City. But will the 12th man on the field be enough to stop the Heisman candidate? Most signs point to no, you can’t stop him; you can only hope to slow him down. But I’ve got another number for you, 62…Gordon’s lowest output last season, against Iowa. The Hawks have faced several top running backs thus far, all of which have given the Iowa defense all they could handle; but Gordon is in a league of his own.
If you’re Iowa, you have to accept the fact that Wisconsin will score, they’ve got Gordon. The daunting task will be the offense keeping pace allowing the defense to make a key stop. Last week’s offense wasn’t a great performance, but compared to the effort given in Minnesota; looked alright. You can get away with turnovers, missed opportunities against Illinois; but you won’t be able to against the Badgers. The unsung hero Mark Weisman catches a lot of flak for his speed, but his relentless effort to gain an extra yard will pay huge dividends keeping drives alive. Quarterback Jake Rudock is in for his toughest assignment where a home crowd can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you want the debate to end, then silence it on the field.
If Iowa is to come away with a victory, there’s no doubt it will have been a team effort. In years past the defense has been the leaders on the field, and this week there needs to be 11 leaders out there on defense. Iowa’s weakness just happens to be Gordon’s specialty, so shutting down the outside will require the defense to work as one solid unit.
Despite the stumbles, Iowa finds itself with a national audience; with an opportunity to climb the Big 10 West. It’s Time for the Hawks to grab the bull by the horns and bring the Heartland trophy back to Iowa City.
