Who’s in? That’s the question teams all across America are hoping to answer, for the first ever College Football Playoffs. The Iowa Hawkeyes begin their 2014 campaign at Kinnick Stadium hosting interstate rival Northern Iowa this Saturday at 9am PST on BTN.
Every season Coach Kirk Ferentz reminds his team that it’s one game at a time, but no one can ignore the whispers running through Melrose Avenue about the potential of the Hawkeyes. Many consider Iowa to have a great chance to win the Big Ten Conference West Division, and even the Big Ten Championship. Should I dare say a shot at the playoffs? ESPN already has, casting the Hawks in their national promotion as contenders.
Returning to lead the Hawks are Quarterback Jake Rudock, Running Backs Mark Weisman and Jordan Canzeri; along with stud Offensive lineman Brandon Scherff. Iowa’s offense finally showed improvements under third year Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis. One glaring problem for the offense is lack of big plays, look for Rudock to try and utilize Wide Receivers Kevonte Martin-Manley and Tevaun Smith down the field. Ferentz typically likes to play one quarterback, but C.J. Beathard is showing great improvement; and could earn a few series. Iowa will remain committed to the run, hopefully opening up the deep play action.
Defensively, the front line is stacked returning most of last year’s starters including Carl Davis and Drew Ott. The line will need to stay healthy as depth is a major concern for the Hawks. The most daunting task Iowa faces could be replacing three productive linebackers; who currently are all on NFL rosters.
Buckeye country is reeling from the news of its starting Quarterback Braxton Miller suffering a season-ending injury. This changes everything in the Big 10 race. Could the stars be aligning for Iowa? Will Southern California be turned Black and Yellow? It’s football season folks, and that means anything is possible!
