The scoreboard read 20-17, but everyone knows it’s still the HAWKEYE STATE! After a disappointing loss to the Cyclones, Iowa heads to Pittsburgh to take on the 3-0 Panthers. The first road game of the season, and there’s so many lingering questions surrounding the program.
Let’s start with Pitt. A well-coached squad, whose running game is on fire. James Conner leads that group of backs, and has broken Tony Dorsett’s school record for most yards in three games – so nuff said. Quarterback Chad Voytik doesn’t exactly strike fear in defenses with his 89 yards passing last week, but he is certainly a threat with his legs; and that has always been problematic for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes are “trying to find the right rhythm right now,” says Head Coach Kirk Ferentz. And fans are losing their patience waiting on the Hawks to find it. The offense under Ferentz has been trying to find its way in most years. The offense has succeeded the most with dynamic and playmaking quarterbacks like Banks, Tate and Stanzi. This leads to the discussion if Jake Ruddock is good enough to lead the team to wins. CJ Beathard is waiting in the wings and many feel he is capable of seizing the moment. It’s been well mentioned that the last time a quarterbacks fate was sealed, was in 2008 against Pittsburgh. Football in many ways is like life, you can either take risks or play it safe. There’s no guarantee when making risk, but the rewards are much greater.
This could be a defining week for Iowa. Ferentz doubters are out, and if Iowa can’t come away with a win; it might have a negative effect on the teams psyche for the remainder of the year. Don’t dismiss the struggling Hawks just yet, the strength of this team is against the run, and Pitt’s offense might be exactly what Iowa needs. If the defense can hold the Panthers to field goals, it will set the offense up to win. Maybe a must win moment, let’s all make sure we’re the 12th man on the field on Saturday.
