It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the 2014 Iowa Hawkeyes, now marching up to “Kinnick North” this week; vying to keep Floyd of Rosedale out of the hands of the Minnesota Gophers. What’s become one of the best of the Big 10 traditions, a win significantly keeps both teams in the hunt for the West championship.
There are rumors that somehow Coach Ferentz was able to get his hands on a time machine, as most of last Saturday felt like 2002 all over again. An offense firing on all cylinders, attacking vertically, a stout defense? One can only hope that the light bulb has finally switched on for this Hawkeye team.
Despite an embarrassing loss to Illinois, Minnesota still controls its own destiny as well. Even ESPN was showing the gophers love this week, and that was just as shocking as them discussing the Big 10 at all. David Cobb is the leader in the backfield and with a struggling quarterback; the offensive line has to create gaps against the Iowa D. The gopher defense seems to be coming back down to earth in the last few weeks, giving up 38 points to Purdue and 28 against Illinois.
This could be a defining game for quarterback Jake Rudock, he’s looked great; he’s also struggled. After last week, the fans know what he can do, but they’ll expect it week in and week out. Rudock has to prove he can continually win, and a feisty crowd in Minneapolis isn’t going to make that job easy at all. The offensive line displayed ruthless aggression against the Wildcats, and if that continues; Mark Weisman and the unknown freshman Akrum Wadley will punish the Gopher front line.
The atmosphere is going to be insane, the hate in the air can be smelled all the way back to Iowa City. If this same offense arrives this week, Iowa will dominate this game by late third quarter. If they forget there’s a game to be played again, they’ll make us regret we ever took that goalpost out of their stadium.
