You weren’t the only one sweating bullets last Saturday as Iowa was able to hold off the Panthers of Northern Iowa. This week should be easier right? Not so fast! Outsiders might think Iowa’s schedule is light, but trust me; the Hawkeyes know they have to bring their A game.
Ball State is a program on the rise, winning 10 games a year ago. The trip to Iowa City will be first year starting quarterback Ozzie Mann’s first road game, certainly a test for any quarterback; especially in a hostile environment. Ball State will likely employ an up-tempo attack and expose Iowa’s secondary much like Northern Iowa.
Iowa typically likes to fly under the radar; there will be none of that this season! The offense looked great at times, but also showed a lack of consistency. QB Jake Ruddock has to embrace that he has playmakers, and allow them to do just that; make plays! The run game was effective, but substitutions seemed to keep anyone from getting into rhythm.
It wasn’t going to be easy replacing three outstanding linebackers, but you have to wonder if even Coach Ferentz expected the secondary to struggle that badly. Not once, not twice, but three times the Panthers were allowed to go deep to wide open receivers. How quickly Iowa can turn this around remains to be seen, but it is crucial if Iowa wants to have a successful season.
This is just another game for Ball State, packed stadiums and unfamiliar atmospheres don’t mean a thing to this club. The Hawks need to put four quarters together and defend their turf. It’s time for the offense to grow, to expect to put up points every series; and the defense to get back to the basics of shutting down opponents.
