Football Game Watch #12
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers
Friday, November 24, 2017, 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.
Barney’s Beanery (2 locations: Santa Monica and Redondo Beach)
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
How quickly a season of Iowa Football comes and goes. We’ve seen it all this season, jubilation to heartbreak and everything in between. I’ve had an incredible time meeting and hanging with all the So Cal Hawkeyes at Barney’s Beanery in Santa Monica and Redondo Beach. Huge Shout Out to Redondo Beach game watch host Garrett Darland, who always shows South Bay Hawkeyes a good time!
I’m really excited about our new endeavor with Iowa’s Journalism and Mass Communications department, as Senior, Tanner Lafever joined our team in writing game day previews and did an awesome job breaking down the keys to the game with a great sense of humor. In the coming months, we’ll be introducing more Hawkeye students who will be bringing us the latest from Iowa City in future newsletters.
Many of you have asked for it, and we will have a few Iowa Basketball game watches this season at Barney’s Beanery. We’re going to try and schedule mostly Saturday games, so we don’t conflict with NFL Sunday’s. Follow our Facebook and Twitter pages for updates, and we’ll send out newsletter invites as well.
Enjoy the Thanksgiving Holiday and let’s bring home the last rivalry trophy! Go Hawks!
IOWA vs. NEBRASKA
Here’s the game preview by Tanner Lafever.
I’m going to try really hard to sell you guys on this last game.
Seriously, I’m going to try.
With that in mind an executive decision has
mercifully considerately been made to ignore anything that might have taken place a week ago, leaving sole attention to be paid toward a Black Friday brawl with Nebraska.
So that’s where I’ll be for a special early kickoff between the Hawkeyes (6-5, 3-5) and the Cornhuskers (4-7, 3-5) at 1:00 PM PST on FS1.
My own personal reasoning for tuning in is not all that important, but I’m going to share it anyway.
For one, because writing this preview requires that I at least say something about this upcoming game. Secondly, I’m a self-medicated football junkie that would watch barn animals play the game (even with what I’m assuming would be limited effectiveness executing the forward pass).
And third, but most importantly, I’ll watch Iowa take the field in Lincoln on Friday out of sheer pettiness.
Because let’s be honest with ourselves, Nebraska is just the worst.
Apparently they get to own the world because their program was great from the 70’s through the 90’s (just don’t bring up much of anything since the turn of the century, they hate that). Meanwhile, Iowa has plodded along to fairly consistent success littered with swoons of greatness ever since Captain Kirk got things rolling around 2001.
But don’t fool yourself. It’ll be a cold day in
Nebraska hell before ‘Husker fans acknowledge that Iowa has been the far more successful program since any of the players participating in Friday’s game have been old enough to remember.
Sure I’m pulling for a Hawkeye victory because seven wins are better than six. That being said, I’m hardly above satisfying my own spiteful feelings toward Big Red. An Iowa ‘W’ this week would check both of those boxes.
And in the spirit of spitefulness, it is the week of Thanksgiving after all.
So for as much as we’ll acknowledge hating the last two Hawkeye football performances (damnit I said I wasn’t going to bring that up didn’t I?), we can also admit to ourselves that we hate our extended families more….and Nebraska even more than them.
Basically what I’m saying is that this is a week of hostility no matter how you slice it. So don’t run from those resentful emotions. Embrace them.
Take a completely unnecessary political shot at that uncle you only see twice each year. Insult your cranky mother-in-law by openly dry heaving at the mere notion of eating her disgusting turkey dressing. But do it all with a spare reserve of vitriol saved up for kickoff on Friday.
Heaven knows Nebraska deserves it.
Finally, I’d be remiss not to wish every Hawkeye out there a genuinely bearable Thanksgiving (let’s be honest, that’s the best any of us can hope for). You may not be able to give thanks for a 10 win season, but we can all give thanks for college football’s existence in our lives each and every fall.
Personally, I’ll be eternally thankful for an Iowa win over the ‘Huskers on Friday, and I’m confident the rest of humanity shares that sentiment as well (remember, nobody likes Nebraska).
So safe travels to all this week, and thank you for indulging me and my whimsical football outlook throughout this bizarre regular season. Hopefully it’s been as amusing to you all as it’s been cathartic for me.
See you Friday, and GO HAWKS!
