IOWA Football Gamewatch vs. Northwestern – 9:00 AM

Bye week feels even longer after a painful loss.  The east coast trip to Maryland proved to be too much for the Hawkeyes, as they simply could not move the chains.  Pat Fitzgerald leads his hungry Wildcats into Iowa City, a place where they know who to win.

Will the real Jake Rudock please stand up?  A spectacular performance against Indiana was followed up by a dreadful outing against Maryland.  So much for the two quarterback system, CJ Beathard didn’t take a snap.  Maybe a perfect storm of mistakes, but the offense hasn’t found an identity, and offensive strategy doesn’t make a lot of sense.  There’s good talent on this team, and that’s what drives most Hawk fans crazy.  It’s up to the coaches to make a strategic change, the offense needs to worry less about time of possession and worry more about scoring points.

In every league; flag, Pop Warner or even Snoop Dogg Youth football; every coach yells “Wrap up!”  That means that you secure the tackle with both arms wrapping the ball carrier.  This basic fundamental better become the priority for the defense.  Youth in certain positions was expected, but giving up the big plays consistently was not.  The defense has always carried a Ferentz lead squad, but the truth is; you should demand the same product from both the offense and the defense.

More than anything, this team needs confidence, and they might be able to find some against the Wildcats.  This is not the best Northwestern team Iowa has faced, but in years past that hasn’t always mattered anyway.  Expect a heavy dose of running, and a second half appearance from Beathard.  Northwestern will hit Iowa with all it has, but the defense will re-emerge at just the right time to seal the victory.  This week is on the coaches, they have to adjust and lead this team back in the right direction.

This week’s halftime raffle will be at SANTA MONICA. Make sure to check in with one of the hosts for your 1st FREE raffle ticket for some great Iowa gear. IOWA Football Gamewatch vs. Maryland – 9:00 AM

The 2014 season is half over and Iowa is one victory shy of becoming bowl eligible. After the homecoming win against Indiana, the Hawkeyes are on the road facing an unfamiliar opponent in Maryland.

Maryland and Rutgers are the new kids on the block in the Big 10, and by most accounts; they’ve put up a good showing in their first season. The tables are turned as Maryland host the Hawkeyes for their homecoming week. The Terps have had their own quarterback controversy, starting quarterback C.J. Brown was replaced in the second half against Ohio State. The defense gets a big boost with linebacker Abner Logan returning to the lineup off a suspension. When watching Maryland, one thing that stands out, they can score points! Last week’s 45 outing from Iowa wasn’t the norm, but 30’s is for Maryland; so the offense has to be ready to continue to do its part.

Iowa received a lot of love this week after a 28 point first quarter against the Hoosiers. Maybe a little competition lit a fire under Jake Rudock, hitting 19 of 27 passes. The first half looked like he was on a mission to prove to Kinnick stadium, that he could get it done. But it wasn’t just Rudock, the entire team contributed, especially freshman Jonathan Parker rumbling 60 yards off a jet sweep for a touchdown. Just when the offense looks in synch, the defense fell asleep. Indiana capitalized on several big plays, something the Maryland coaching staff has to be salivating at. The strength of the defense is the front line and they have to regroup this week.

The second half of the season will be determined by the team’s ability to play consistently. Iowa needs Rudock to play with that fire weekly, not every other week. First and second downs, the defense looks great, they need to stay more focused on third; and get off the field. Ohio State took care of business by punching them right in the mouth Big Ten style. Iowa can once again be considered one of the Big 10 bullies, and it starts by bullying the new kid in town.

IOWA Football Gamewatch vs. Purdue – 9:00 AM

It was a Hollywood ending for the second coming of “Sunshine”. Known for his golden locks reminiscent of “Sunshine” from Remember the Titans; CJ Beathard surpassed all expectations as he rallied the comeback against the Pitt Panthers. There was a different energy to the entire team once Beathard entered the game, and now Coach Ferentz has the difficult job of deciding which quarterback will open up the Big Ten slate.

The Boilermakers of Purdue host the Hawkeyes this weekend, and despite overall records; both teams are 0-0 in Big Ten play. Purdue has struggled to find an identity this season, losing to MAC opponent Central Michigan; but hanging in tough against Notre Dame. Possibly a case of playing up or down to their competitors level, and if that’s the case Iowa better be aware.

Last weekend’s comeback could not have happened without the Hawkeye defense stepping up and shutting down Pitt in the second half. Carl Davis and Drew Ott have to continue to be disruptive on the front lines. The secondary is still a work in progress, being out of place at times; but it is much improved from week one. Defensive Back Desmond King needs his own shout-out, for his NFL worthy efforts.

Where has this Greg Davis offense been? Restless fans have been asking, well; more like demanding to see a vertical threat, and Iowa delivered. Even Tecmo Bowl fans know a good passing attack opens the holes for the run game. Iowa proved they have talent at the wide outs and if used properly, can be playmakers. The only question left, is who will get them the ball. To be fair, you have to give Rudock credit for how he has played, getting Iowa back into the Ball State game. The argument for Beathard is not a knock on Rudock, CJ just might be the better game day quarterback.
