2012 Gamewatch #10: Iowa vs. Purdue

Recap of Last Week: The game was delayed 60 minutes due to lightning but the Hawkeyes started fast scoring two touchdowns within 12 seconds to take a 14 – 0 first quarter lead.  It was downhill from there.  Indiana’s passing attack, led by wide receiver Cody Latimer, moved the ball with consistency and dropped the Hawkeyes 24 to 21.  The loss dropped the Hawks to 4 – 5 overall and 2 – 3 in B1G 10 play. Worse, the Hawkeyes now need to win 2 of their final 3 games to be bowl eligible.

This week. Family Week in I.C.! Last week’s loss changed the outlook for the season dramatically.  As mentioned, the Hawks need to win 2 of their final 3 games to get to 6 wins and become bowl eligible.  It certainly won’t be easy but with Michigan and Nebraska looming there is a great opportunity to play “the spoiler”.  This week should be another interesting contest as the Hawks host the Purdue Boilermakers.  Purdue comes in losers of their last 5 consecutive games.  Last week they were dumped by Penn State in a similar fashion as we were. Don’t look for them to run the ball though.  Purdue threw the ball 62 times in last week’s loss, the most passing attempts by a B1G 10 team this season.  With Purdue’s recent struggles it should be a good opportunity to get back in the WIN column and end this season on a positive note.  This week is “black-out” week at Kinnick.  Dawn your (mostly) Black N Gold and find your way to your favorite Barney’s location to cheer on our Hawkeyes!

We look forward to seeing everyone.  GO HAWKS!!!

2012 Gamewatch #9: Iowa vs. Indiana

Recap of Last Week: Last Saturday looked very similar to the Saturday before that…horrible with not much to cheer about.  This is not a good trend.  The Hawkeyes surrendered 349 rushing yards in last week’s disappointing loss (28 to 17) at Northwestern.  The score wasn’t that close and Iowa has allowed 564 yards on the ground the last two weeks.  Both sides of the ball will need to play better moving forward.  According to ESPN the Hawkeyes are ranked 10th (out of 12) in the B1G 10 – not good.

Now to this week…The Hawkeyes find themselves at 4 – 4 overall and 2 – 2 in the B1G 10.  This week’s game at Indiana is a pivotal game.  With a loss it would appear to be a bowl-less season but a win makes the remainder of the season interesting and an opportunity to play spoiler to Michigan and move up in the bowl picture.  Indiana comes into the game at 3 – 5 overall and 1 – 3 in the B1G 10.  It should be a very close game.  Indiana has lost four games this season by four points or less (combined 10 points) and Iowa has lost two games by three points or less (combined four points).  Indiana’s pass offense is the best in the B1G 10 which could mean serious problems for our reeling defense.  If the defense can overcome Indiana’s charge and Iowa’s offense can get running back Damon Bullock on track we should find success.  Iowa holds a 42 – 27 advantage in the series dating back to 1912 and we should expect to continue our dominance.  Iowa is a 1.5 underdog and the thought of losing to measly Indiana should be more than enough motivation.  Noon game this week so no excuses.  Get out to your favorite Barney’s location to cheer on our Hawkeyes!

2012 Gamewatch #8: Iowa vs. Northwestern (Raffle at Pasadena Barney’s)

Recap of Last Week: Last Saturday is a day you really want to forget about as a Hawkeye fan.  There was very little to cheer about in Iowa’s 38 – 14 loss at the hands of Penn State.  The usual dependable Iowa running attack was held to just 20 yards.  Compounding the loss were a series of injuries to starting offensive linemen Andrew Donnal and Brandon Scherff.  The good thing is that both men will be replaced this week by experienced players.

Now to this week…The next two weeks the Hawkeyes head on the road against teams that score a lot of points.  This week the Hawks go to Evanston, IL to take on the Northwestern Wildcats.  The past few weeks defense, particularly pass defense, has been optional for Northwestern.  Northwestern has the worst pass defense in the B1G Ten and their secondary is still depleted going into this week.  Further, last week they gave up 342 yards through the air (543 total yards) when they surrendered a 28 to 16 4th quarter lead to Nebraska. This week look for a healthy Mark Weisman (…for Heisman!!!) to return to form and open up the passing game for JVB and the Hawkeye offense. This week we are the morning game so get up and at em and get to your favorite Barney’s location to cheer on our Hawkeyes.

We look forward to seeing everyone.  GO HAWKS!!!

2012 Gamewatch #7: Iowa vs. Penn State

Recap of Last Week: It was cold, it was rainy, and it wasn’t pretty, but Iowa defensive back Greg Castillo intercepted a deflected pass to give the Hawkeyes a 19-16 double overtime win. Running back Mark Weisman continues to amaze, running 26 times for 116 yards and a touchdown before leaving late with an injury. It was Weisman’s fourth 100-yard rushing game in a row. Not bad for a guy who began the season as a backup fullback. Not only was it a big win in conference play, it was also coach Kirk Ferentz’s 100th victory as Iowa’s head football coach.  He is now 43 behind the legendary Hayden Fry.

Now to this week…We are right where we want to be.  Sure it was a very disappointing 2 – 2 start but the Hawks now sit atop the Legends Division leader board along with Michigan at 2 – 0 in conference play.  The Hawks are in control of their own destiny and it continues Saturday night against Penn State.  Penn State started the season 0 – 2 but has since turned the page on the child sex abuse scandal and is on a 4-game winning streak.  Mark Weisman is cleared to participate after sustaining a sprained ankle last week.  Coach Ferentz said he’d be shocked if Weisman can play but the good news is that true Sophomore Jordan Canzeri will be Greg Garmon’s back-up.  Canzeri showed a lot of burst and athleticism late last year but tore his ACL in the spring.  Coach Ferentz said this week that the cavalry is coming!  We are only going to get better and last week’s win gave the Hawks all the confidence they need.  It’s a night game (5:05pm start) which puts us in the spotlight. Get to your favorite Barney’s location early to snag a table. We look forward to seeing everyone.

GO HAWKS!!!
