Iowa Basketball Gamewatch vs. Purdue – Sunday January 27th 12:30pm

To kick off our 2013 event calendar, we are going to have our first Basketball Gamewatch of the season Sunday January 27th at 12:30pm against Purdue at Barney’s Beanery Santa Monica. Even though Fran McCaffery’s team started the Big Ten season 0-3, they made a huge statement at Northwestern winning 70-50 for their first Big Ten win. This year’s Hawkeye team has the potential to earn an NCAA Tourney bid, the first since 2006 and excitement is back in the program again! So come on out and help cheer on the Hawkeyes!

Last Gamewatch of the Season: Iowa vs. Nebraska (FRIDAY!!)

Recap of Last Week: Last week the Hawks extended their losing streak to 5 games when they were outmatched on the road at Michigan.  The Hawkeyes had won the three previous meetings but Michigan’s seniors got revenge scoring 28 unanswered points and won by a final score of 42 – 17 (it wasn’t as close as the score…).

There were some major changes off the field since Iowa’s last game.  The Big Ten appears to be expanding by two more teams – Maryland and Rutgers.  If the transaction is finalized the two teams will be added to the Big Ten schedule in 2014.

This week…Hopefully many of you will be attending the game while visiting family and friends for Thanksgiving weekend.  The Hawks certainly have their work cut-out for them.  The Nebraska Cornhuskers, led by quarterback Taylor Martinez, come into the game 9 – 2 overall and 6 – 1 in the Big Ten.  Nebraska should be hungry as they are seeking a win and a spot in the Big Ten title game.  This situation is the perfect opportunity to upset our newest rival and, potentially, prevent Nebraska from playing for the conference title.  If you are enjoying your turkey in SoCal find your way to your favorite Barney’s location and cheer on our beloved Hawks in their last game of the year!!!

We look forward to seeing everyone.  GO HAWKS!!!

The Deal: Enjoy 35% off all food and 50% off beverages for all who wear Iowa Gear (offer valid during the game only).  Please be courteous and gratuitous to Barney’s staff.

2012 Gamewatch #11: Iowa vs. Michigan AND Food Drive

Recap of Last Week: Last week the Hawkeyes lost to Purdue at home for the first time since 1992.  In a tie game the Hawkeye’s gave Purdue the ball with just 16 seconds left to play.  Purdue’s offense completed a 20-yard pass play to set-up a field goal opportunity with just a few ticks on the clock.  Sure enough, Purdue’s kicker converted a 46-yard field goal as time expired to upend the Hawks 27 to 24.  It was heartbreaking.

This week…The Hawkeyes have lost 4 straight Big 10 games and now face their first ranked opponent of the season.  Michigan is 7 – 3 on the season and currently ranked #21 in the BCS.  The good news is that it is still uncertain if Michigan’s star quarterback, Denard Robinson, will play Saturday.  The bad news is that Robinson’s backup, Devin Gardner, has led Michigan to back-to-back victories and the offense is not missing a beat.  Michigan’s defense is a different story.  It allowed over 430 yards last week so it will be interesting to see if the Hawks can continue to control the football (#12 in the country in turnover margin) and put up some points.  The Hawks have won the last three match-ups against Michigan.  Michigan needs a win to stay alive in the Big 10 title hunt and the Hawks must win to have a shot at a bowl game.  It should be a good one.  Only two gamewatches left this year!  Get out to your favorite Barney’s location to cheer on our Hawkeyes!

**Also, please remember to bring some non-perishable food items to the Santa Monica Barney’s Beanery for our Annual Food Drive to support local families who are hungry. Please see previous post for information on the food drive.

We look forward to seeing everyone.  GO HAWKS!!!

LA Iowa Club Food Drive – Nov. 17th at Barneys

The Los Angeles Iowa Club is partnering with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to help provide food for the hungry this Thanksgiving. As you prepare for another Gamewatch against Michigan on Saturday, November 17th, the LA Iowa Club is asking its members to donate at least 1 non-perishable item to the Santa Monica Gamewatch location. We will have a box available to drop off your donation at the Gamewatch site. The LA Iowa Club’s target is to donate 100 pounds of food toward this effort.

We would also like the other Gamewatch locations to get involved if someone at Pasadena, Burbank, or West Hollywood Barney’s would be willing to help out. All we would ask is that a box is available to collect the donations and we can help coordinate to get the food to the LA Regional Food Bank. If you would like to help, please send us an e-mail at laiowaclub@yahoo.com no later than November 10th.

Examples of non-perishable items to donate:

Canned Chicken, Powdered Milk, Canned Tuna, Saltine Crackers, Soups, Juices, White Rice, Jarred or Canned Spaghetti Sauce, Grape Jelly, Canned Vegetables, Breakfast Cereals, Pork & Beans, Peanut Butter, Macaroni & Cheese, Pasta, Popcorn, Salt, Sugar, Flour, Ketchup, etc.

**Los Angeles Hawks, let’s do our part and help the LA Regional Food Bank achieve their goal, and see that no one goes hungry in Los Angeles County.
