Iowa Gamewatch #4: September 21, 2013 Iowa vs W. Michigan at 9:00 A.M. – Santa Monica Raffle / T-shirts in Stock!

Iowa is officially the Hawkeye State for another year.  Fresh off their road win in Ames on Saturday against archrival Iowa State, the Hawkeyes close out their non-conference schedule with a home game versus the Western Michigan Broncos.  The Broncos come in at 0-3.

Iowa looks to keep it going on the ground with Mark Weisman, who’s now rushed for over 100 yards in each of the first three games.  The defense has steadily improved showing an ability to get pressure on the quarterback, but still shows it’s vulnerable to giving up big plays.

For Iowa to seal the victory, they must play to their strengths and run the football.  Will Iowa play with passion?  This lies squarely at the feet of Coach Ferentz, the battle for the state of Iowa is over; and Western Michigan would like nothing more than to catch Iowa looking ahead to the Big Ten opener against rival Minnesota.

Please join us at either one of the two official game watch Barney’s locations and enjoy 35% of food and 50% of beverages to any Iowa fan who wears something with Iowa on it (offer valid during the game only).

Iowa Gamewatch #3: September 14, 2013 Iowa vs Iowa State at 3:00 P.M – Santa Monica Raffle / T-shirts in Stock!

A win’s, a win…and that’s what Hawk fans should take away from Iowa’s 28-14 victory over the Missouri State Bears.  No, not the prettiest win; but Iowa more importantly needed to get over the hump and they did just that.

This Saturday all eyes in the Hawkeye State will be focused on the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry in Ames. The Cy-Hawk trophy series isn’t about how you win; the only thing that matters is if you walk out of Kinnick or Jack Trice Stadium a winner.  Iowa faces its first road test of the year, while Iowa State desperately seeks a chance to prove they are better than the 28-20 upset from in-state rival Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones defense is young, and the Panthers exposed that; racking up over 400 yards of offense.  The issue for Iowa…they’re a young team as well.  Jake Rudock continues to show poise and the ability to extend plays, but also shows he’s still learning; throwing ill-advised passes.  Mark Wiseman continues to be a bully on the ground and Iowa will need more of that from him to take the pressure off of Rudock.

This is not just another game for either side; you either bleed yellow and red or black and gold.  Fans take great pride in claiming victory and there’s no love lost between the two.  You can go ahead and throw out the records, stats, talent and everything else we all use to determine the better team.  This series goes beyond that, and the team that bleeds the most passion and fight; will ultimately walk away with the Cy-Hawk trophy in hand and most importantly; the right to claim the state for another year.

Please join us at either one of the two official game watch Barney’s locations and enjoy 35% of food and 50% of beverages to any Iowa fan who wears something with Iowa on it (offer valid during the game only).

Iowa Gamewatch #2: September 7, 2013 Iowa vs Missouri State at 9:00 A.M – Santa Monica Raffle / T-shirts in Stock!

Last Saturday Iowa fans were reminded, that almost doesn’t count…losing their 7th game in a row in heartbreaking fashion to Northern Illinois 30-27.  While the lost stings every Hawk fan, there was certainly reason to believe the season will get better.  The offense showed signs of life, and Jake Rudock was a big part of that.

This week, Iowa focuses on their next challenge; the Missouri State Bears.  This will be the first meeting between the two schools and with both teams coming off close loses, expect both sides to be pumped to claim their first “W” of the season.

Missouri State is led by their Junior Quarterback Kierra Harris, completing 17-of-33 passes for 189 yards last week against Northwestern State.  Much like Iowa, Missouri State struggled to find a consistent offense.

Although Iowa found success on the field, it’s correcting the mistakes that will determine if Iowa will be successful from here on out.  Key factors in this game will be how much improvement Iowa can make from week 1 to week 2.  Iowa’s secondary weakness’ need to be addressed and the offense has to take a step forward and not regress like they did in the second half.

Please join us at either one of the two official game watch Barney’s locations and enjoy 35% of food and 50% of beverages to any Iowa fan who wears something with Iowa on it (offer valid during the game only).

Iowa Gamewatch #1: August 31, 2013 Iowa vs Northern Illinois at 12:30 P.M – Santa Monica Raffle

It’s that time of year Hawk fans!! Another football season is upon us.  Perhaps no team left the field last year with more of a sour taste than the Iowa Hawkeyes.  After finishing the season on a 6 game losing streak and missing out on a bowl game; the Hawks have turned the page and are looking to get back on track this Saturday against Northern Illinois.  This is a repeat of last year’s opener, that Iowa won by the slimmest of margins 18-17 at Soldier Field.

Northern Illinois is a team that is coming off the schools best season ever after being crowned the MAC champions and ending the season with a BCS bowl berth. The Huskies return their dynamic dual threat Quarterback Jordan Lynch who finished 6th in the Heisman voting a year ago.  They are poised to have another great year and are picked to win the MAC under first year Head Coach Rod Carey.

Kirk Ferentz returns to lead the Hawkeyes in his 14th year as Head Coach.  2nd year Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis returns looking to increase offensive production from last year’s unit which averaged less than 20 points a game.  On the defensive side, 2nd year Defensive Coordinator Phil Parker will have to find a way to apply more pressure from the defensive line and linebackers.

The biggest story line coming out of camp was the quarterback competition that heated up Iowa City.  Eyeing to replace James Vandenberg are Sophomore Jake Rudock, Juco transfer Cody Sokal and redshirt freshman C.J. Beathard.  Coach Ferentz acknowledged Rudock had the early advantage serving as last year’s backup quarterback, but Ferentz made it clear the competition was open.  Beathard made the most of his opportunities to impress, but late last week; Coach Ferentz named Rudock the starting quarterback.

Offensively, Iowa’s depth at running back has most Hawk fans talking.  Fullback turned feature back Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock are expected to give Iowa a big boost in the run game.  True Freshman LeShun Daniels Jr. has made a big impact at the end of camp and is looking to contribute immediately.

An outstanding group of running backs is only effective with a solid group of offensive line opening the holes.  This year’s group is expected to do just that, with junior Brandon Scherff, Nolan MacMillan and Austin Blythe leading the way.

Senior tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz will have to step up big and be the playmaker many have been waiting to see.  Wide receivers Kevonte Martin-Manley and Jordan Cotton are the returning veterans and Juco transfer Damond Powell has shown the explosiveness to be the big play receiver Iowa is desperately searching for.

The Defense had its highs and lows last season, but certainly has the talent to make an impact.  Expect Linemen Dominic Alvis, Louis Trinca-Pasat and Carl Davis to bring the heat upfront; with linebackers Anthony Hitchens, James Morris and Christian Kirksey to be key contributors.

This year’s key matchups will come down to how well the Hawkeye defense can turn Northern Illinois’ offense into a one dimensional attack. On the flipside, can Iowa’s inexperienced offense exploit the Huskies young defense which only returns 4 starters?  The Huskies are coming to Iowa City with revenge on their minds. This game is shaping up to be an exciting open to the 2013 season.

Please join us at either one of the two official game watch Barney’s locations and enjoy 35% of food and 50% of beverages to any Iowa fan who wears something with Iowa on it (offer valid during the game only).
