2012 Iowa Gamewatch #2: Iowa vs. Iowa State

Recap of Last Week Whew, that was a scary start.  Last week the Hawkeyes got all they could handle from Northern Illinois, the reigning Mid-American Conference champions.  Northern Illinois’ quarterback kept the Hawkeye defense on edge with his running/scrambling ability.  The Hawkeye offense consistently failed to put points on the board after crossing mid-field 8 times in 9 possessions.  The Hawkeyes trailed most of the game but, finally, late in the 4th quarter Iowa running back Damon Bullock found the end zone on a 23-yard run.  This touchdown gave the Hawkeyes an 18 – 17 lead and the defense was able to secure the victory.  It was close and the Hawkeyes have a lot to work on but 1 – 0 is 1 – 0.

Now to this week… There isn’t much to say going into the game against our most bitter rivals from Ames, IA.  This is a big game for our team and our fans and the Hawkeyes have a lot of pay-back after last year (I won’t discuss that here).  Iowa State returns with an explosive offense led by quarterback Steele Jantz.  The key to success will be to slow-down Jantz and the Hawkeyes’ offense will have to be much better than last week.  To heck with the matchups and/or stats…If you aren’t pumped up for this game you probably aren’t a Hawkeye.  Throw on your Black N Gold, get to your favorite Barney’s Beanery location early and get ready for battle!!!
